The Old City and Market of Al Khalil (Hebron) is a thoroughway to the Ibrahimi Mosque (Muslim), also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs (Jewish). The shrine is sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews as the traditional burial place of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah.
Since 1997, Hebron has been divided into two sections: the Palestinian-controlled H1, which comprises 80% of the city, and the IDF-controlled H2, which includes the Cave of the Patriarchs. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control access to the mosque through a series of turnstiles and checkpoints.
Tourism is down in part due to armed Israel Defense Force (IDF) soldiers loitering around the market. Settler and security force violence, as well as ongoing curfews and restrictions on movement, have caused many Palestinian shopkeepers to shut down their businesses and leave the area.
